LGNE broadside exhibit and celebration

In what will likely be my last public appearance before going on maternity leave, I hope you'll join me and many others in celebrating the opening of the LGNE broadside exhibition at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown on Saturday, September 8th from 1 to 4 pm.

Albertine press has two pieces in the show alongside prints by many other talented letterpressers from across the country. Editions will be for sale.

See you there!

Views from a booth - NYIGF

After weeks of crazy and about a year of planning, scouring flea markets, Ikea and Home Depot, a finished booth. Cool and industrial to contrast our soft cotton-y goodies.

Alligator clips on a curtain wire worked beautifully for the card display. Much more versitile from show to show - I can reorganize the cards in any fashion that makes sense for the season.

The Letterpress Library always looks spiffy, but especially so in its drawer/shelf/shadowbox.

Welcome new journals! Ten city scape journals were a big hit, and lots of requests for other cities are pouring in (Toronto, Boston, Manhattan, just to start).

It's true, j'adore Kelly's new "field" pattern - so springtime and happy!

A little Hipstamatic shot of Angela's gorgeous spools.

"Anthropologie-style" shadow boxes of vintage glassine envelopes and stamps, making mighty fine use of the mighty magnets, thank-you-very-much.

Last, but certainly not least, I love our new signs by Woodland Manufacturing. I can't say enough about their amazing service - we had a shipping snafu and nearly didn't have signs for the show, until super-Molly did a two-hour turnaround and overnight-Saturday-delivery shipping to get us a new set in time. Amazing. Thanks, guys - these were the icing on the cake!

Stay tuned for Sadie's walkthrough later this week.

Three more fairs, one more weekend

After the four fairs of this past weekend (I'm still recovering) we have three more great events to look forward to in the week to come.

Friday evening get your cool on and meet us at the Pink Comma Gallery in Boston's South End for a one-night-only opening and print design extravaganza.
This year’s exhibit is entitled Command-P for the Macintosh keyboard shortcut that allows one to print the digital contents of their screen. Command-P explores the dichotomy between traditional and contemporary printing techniques. Each artist in this exhibit uses digital manipulation and classic printing methods in varying degrees to create their work. Whether manually screen-printed computer illustrations or die-cut letterpress prints, the pieces in this show represent the wide spectrum of work celebrating the art of printed matter.
Friday, December 9 from 6 to 10 pm at 46 Waltham Street, Courtyard 1, Boston.

Saturday you'll find us in the Cathedral High School Gym (also in the South End) for the annual SoWa Holiday Market. This fair is always packed but chock full of great makers - fine art, clothes, stationery, ceramics, jewelry, handbags, and don't forget the Yummy Mummy Brownies!

Saturday, December 10 from 11 am until 7 pm at 74 Union Park Street, Boston. $5 admission (kids are free).

Last, but certainly not least, we'll be back in our hometown Somerville for the Snow Mall at the Armory.

Sunday, December 11 from 12 until 6, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville.

As always, you can find our calendars, coasters, notebooks, and holiday cards on Etsy while they last. If you can't make it to one of the fairs and still want to support local businesses, Magpie in Davis Square, Somerville has a great selection of our holiday goodies in stock. For those a bit further away, stop by Concord Handmade in NH or Craftland in RI for even more local crafty goodness.

Scenes from an Open House

I couldn't have asked for a more warm and open place on such a dreary night for our very first event of the season. We were welcomed into the home of Jeremy and Siiri in J.P. along with three other crafters for an intimate evening of schmoozing and shopping.

Jeremy's ceramics are just gorgeous and this noodle-bowl above is a collaboration with Lucas of Black Cap Arts, who hand made the chopsticks that accompany the piece.

There were scrumptious truffles (and a vegan chocolate cake in the kitchen) by Pia of Bread and Beta (I know, brilliant company name).

And Jeanie sews and knits with beautiful colors and country flair.

Not pictured are some of Siiri's Prosperity Candles, made by woman in ravaged parts of the world to help them build a life for themselves and their families.

The night was made complete by the arrival of Dave from Sweet Basil in Needham, laden with four overflowing trays of just mouth-watering bruschetta. It was great fun to meet lots of new people and enjoy a pleasant evening in the company of new friends.

Open House at Ogusky Ceramics

We kick off our holiday fairs extravaganza this Wednesday evening at the home of Ogusky Ceramics and Prosperity Candle. It's a great little group of artisans and a chance to shop in a more intimate, laid back atmosphere. So if you're in J.P. come on over, drink some wine, eat some snacks and start your holiday shopping!

Paper & Chocolate Holiday Open House

We welcome our friends and neighbors to join us for our fourth annual open house and holiday celebration of Paper & Chocolate. As always, we are delighted to share the studio with fellow paper and chocolate artisans May Day Studio, Pressbound, Chasing Square and our newest neighbors, Elaine Hsieh Chocolatier. To round out the afternoon, our neighbors downstairs at the Taza Chocolate Factory Store will be open as well for tastes and tours.

Hope to see you all there!

Stu Rosner exhibition

Our neighbor and occasional collaborator, Stu Rosner is having a local exhibition of his photography from Cuba. Don't miss your chance to see his work in person at the Holyoke Center in Harvard Square.

The exhibition will be up from October 15 through November 3, with an opening reception October 15 from 5 to 7. It's free and open to the public. The Holyoke Center is the big building in Harvard Square with the Au Bon Pain out front. Head inside and find the gallery at the far end on the right, across from the pharmacy.

Michelle Willey - the trunk show

We had a really great trunk show this weekend at Michelle Willey's boutique in the South End.

We had a bunch of people wander in from Open Studios, but our best visitors were some of Michelle's devoted clientele, many from the design world, who were all such a treat to meet and, in many cases, introduce to letterpress!

I love this table that we set up on! Sadly, the hold-the-camera-above-your-head-and-use-autofocus method of shooting yielded a lovely but slightly blurry shot. I always wonder in cases like this what the camera thought it was focusing on, exactly.

We were able to use many of Michelle's vintage boxes and ephemera for display. This was great for me, as I'm always on the lookout for different kinds of display materials for our shows and many of these were just perfect (especially the wooden cheese boxes).

A different way to show off the Letterpress Library.

Michelle's husband Chris found this Kelsey but had never used it. With only one previous owner, it was in fantastic shape and adjusted beautifully for our print demonstration (I brought along rollers and a ready-made form in lockup - a cheeky Ruskin quote about printing).

I just adore Michelle's beautiful displays - the clean collection of house goods begs to be examined shelf by shelf for treasures. Everything is so deceptively simple in arrangement that I had to marvel at how after two days of being in the store, I was still finding shelves I'd missed.

Wooden pop-out birdie - this amazing Finnish design actually comes packaged as a postcard that you can mail for a friend to pop out and assemble.

Can you stand how gorgeous this display of nested bowls is?

Thanks to Michelle for being such a gracious host and to everyone who came by throughout the weekend - it was a real pleasure!

Trunk Show at Michelle Willey

We're so excited to be heading down to Boston's art-central South End for Open Studios weekend. You can find us at modern living boutique Michelle Willey on Union Park Street.

We can't truck the Vandercook over, but we will be doing live printing demonstrations on a table top press so you can get up close and personal with the process. In addition, we're excited to be selling our newest creations, the Letterpress Library, as well as our regular stock of cards, coasters and more.

Plus you can browse Michelle's super chic collection, of course.

If this wasn't enough to get you down to SOWA during Open Studios weekend, here are a few more reasons to come on down:

We'll be there on Saturday from 11 to 5 and Sunday from 12 to 5. Michelle Willey is located at 8 Union Park Street, in Boston's South End.

Hope to see you there!

New York, here we come! (again)

I am so excited to announce that Albertine Press will be debuting at the Gift Show in less than two weeks! Retailers, press and other industry folk are cordially invited to visit us at New York's Newest on Pier 92, booth 300-11.

In addition to our continued collaboration with Angela of Carta Inc. and her cotton ribbons (many new colors), I'd also like to welcome Kelly of May Day Studio, who will be joining us at the show where we'll be showcasing her gorgeous hand-bound albums and journals.

Thankfully we're able to use the same setup as the Stationery Show, and with our catalogs already printed there's not terribly much to prepare. Except the calendar (ai!) which is still not quite finished and I'd really hoped to be able to present it at the show. Well, fingers crossed and design hat on - still a week to work on it!

Printing Arts Fair 2010

Scenes from the Printing Arts Fair this past weekend.

On the left, my favorite contact of the day, finally meeting Pier Gustafson in person! He was writing out beautiful scrolls with people's names, but I also snagged a vintage fountain pen with a great calligraphy nib (and some free writing advice).

Top right are our "hot offs" - neat overprinted (literally) covers from the letterpress library filled with an odd assortment of notecards we've discontinued.

Lower right, a fabulous display on fake grass by Pam of Zoetropa.

It was a quiet day for visitors, but a great day for connecting with friends and fellow printers, and ogling the gorgeous work that everyone is doing (I picked up a several gorgeous chapbooks from Ed at Swamp Press - pics forthcoming).

Renegade Bags

Leave it to Brooklyn, that mecca of eco-friendly urban hipsters  - tere were so many cool canvas bags walking through the booth this weekend that I started taking pictures. So here it is, the Renegade Craft fair in totes:

Two for the price of one - two ladies both with WNYC totes in the booth at the same time (and they didn't know each other!)

Renegade Craft Fair Brooklyn

Rain, rain go away, come again another day - we have a craft fair this weekend! Come on, everyone, put on your wishing caps and help us magic up a perfect June weekend for our attendance (with a tent full of paper!) at this year's Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair.

We'll be sharing a tent with May Day Studio again (yay!) and we'll have a ton of discounted cards just in time for summer wedding/baby/father's day/graduation/birthday season. Come and stock up!

Hope to see you there.

Paper love

While too busy greeting visitors, giving press demos and playing "pass-the-baby," I didn't get a chance to take any photos from this weekend's Paper & Chocolate event. As luck would have it, one Ryan Maxwell not only took some beautiful shots, but generously shared them with me for the blog.

This is my favorite - I just love the composition of the shot. It's exactly the feel I want to frame my product shots from now on.

The 'hohoho' was the lockup for our print demo - gift tags that visitors could print and take with them. On the platen of our Beast were ghost prints from the latest run of Taza gift boxes.

For more of Ryan's beautiful photos, including shots from Taza, visit his Flickr stream.

Thanks Ryan, and thanks to the 2500+ visitors to 561 Windsor, especially those who ventured upstairs to our little paper haven. Thanks to Melissa, Kelly, Angela, Matt and Becka for sharing your work, and a big thanks to Jacob who braved the cold lobby to spread the word and send people upstairs.
